The world before arrival

The pattern was already here.

Long before Humanity traveled between stars, Maia IV was home to an advanced civilization organized around a base-3 understanding of mathematics, time, ecology, and meaning.

The civilization vanished in deep antiquity. Its inscriptions, durable materials, foundations, and protected sites survived in enough detail to reveal a culture shaped by three stars, three moons, and recurring triadic systems.

The Fates are not Federation inventions. Their associations with beginning, measure, and ending descend from the world’s surviving record. Their familiar names are Federation Standard renderings of far older ideas.

The Queens

Queen’s Triad is a compact hierarchical system of three main-sequence stars. Their combined illumination produces Maia IV’s warm daylight without requiring all three stellar discs to dominate the sky.

The three stars are collectively called the Queens. The name originated with Maia IV’s vanished civilization and was retained by Federation cartographers. Their presence is expressed more often through warmth, color, and changing light than through three prominent suns.

Although slightly larger than Earth, Maia IV has lower surface gravity because its interior contains a smaller proportion of dense metals.

Atmosphere and sky

Native photosynthetic aeroplankton inhabit the upper atmosphere and cloud-forming layers. Under the warm combined spectrum of the Maia stars, their pigments and metabolic activity intensify the planet’s tangerine sky and pale celadon clouds.

As temperatures fall after sunset, the organisms enter a lower-energy state and descend within the atmosphere. The colored daytime scattering diminishes, revealing a deep cobalt sky.

The civilization organized mathematics, measurement, architecture, astronomy, language, and symbolic thought around base three. The Queens, the Fates, and their associated symbolism all originate in this culture.

The cause of its disappearance remains unresolved.
